MetLab is an atmospheric science research group led by Prof. Xiaoming (William) Shi. Our work focuses on developing new computing approaches for the simulation of convection and clouds, and such new methods can be computational and/or about physical parameterizations. We have recently been investigating the application of deep learning in climate downscaling, data assimilation, and turbulence parameterization. Our research also investigates the fundamental dynamics of extreme weather to advance our understanding of the atmosphere and the impact of climate change. Currently, what we are studying include severe convection and tropical cyclones on the South China coast.
